‘As each one does their part, we grow in love’

Summer 2023

Summer Term 2 Update

What a busy term it has been in Cherry Class! Such an exciting way to end our Year 1 journey.

We have been to Stonehenge on a trip, had Sports Day, a Stone Age Day and been to visit our new classes and teachers.

Our trip to Stonehenge was wonderful and the children had a wonderful time. They were in awe of the stones and learnt so much about how people used to live during this time.

The Stone Age day that we had was engaging and exciting for the children. They made biscuithenge, made and cooked bread over the fire, created clay pots and jewellery, did some cave painting and had a go at making spears.

The children have continued to work incredibly hard and have recently finished some absolutely wonderful stone age stories based on the text 'Stone Age Boy'.

We have done lots of reviewing of our learning so far this year during this term and the children have remembered so much! They should be very proud.

In PE we have been putting our batting and fielding skills to good use and played some games of rounders.

Overall, the children have done incredibly well and should be very proud of the progress they have made in Year 1!

Summer Term 1 - Update

We have had an exciting half term learning about our new topic the 'Stone Age'. The children have absolutely loved learning about what life was like during this time and they can remember so many facts about the Stone Age too. We had an interesting and engaging visit from The Salisbury Museum at the start of May and the children got to handle real Stone Age artefacts and learn about the animals that were alive during this time.

We studied the text 'Stone Age Boy' in our English and wrote postcards back to our family, imagining that we were the boy from the story. In English, we have also put all of our knowledge to good use by creating Stone Age information texts. The children worked so hard and have created some wonderful pieces of work, now on display in the classroom.

In Maths, we have been focusing on Multiplication and Division as well as beginning our learning on Fractions. The children were brilliant at sharing and grouping using counters and were able to show the repeated addition.

In Science, we have been learning all about plants. The children started off the term by planting their own sunflower seeds and we have watched them grow throughout the term, keeping plant diaries to record this progress.

In PE we have been learning how to strike and field, using our batting and fielding skills. The children have worked hard on their over and under arm throwing and their batting skills using a racket.

To finish off the term, we had a fantastic Science Week which launched with a whole school walk. We paired up with Year 5 and went on a walk up towards Figsbury Rings. The children were creating tallies of the Deciduous and Evergreen trees that we saw on route and they put these into pictograms upon returning to school. We also had a delayed visit from a fire engine and got the chance to use the hose and sit in the cab. On Thursday, we were treated to a whole school display by some birds of prey on the school field.

We hope you have a wonderful half term break and look forward to seeing you back in school for Summer Term 2!
