Autumn Term 2024

Autumn Term 2 - Explorers

Year 1 have had a very busy and exciting term! In November, we started learning about famous explorers and have learnt about the achievements of various famous people such as; Christopher Columbus, Amy Johnson, Ranulph Fiennes and Amelia Earhart. The children have written a recount based on the text ‘Journey’ and a biography about Amelia Earhart’s life. In Maths, we have been learning about Addition and Subtraction within 10 and also 2D and 3D shapes. In Science, we have been learning about the seasons in the UK and the different weather types and temperatures each season has. We have been exploring attacking and defending in PE and learning how to control the ball whilst moving. In our RE lessons, we have learnt about the Christian story of Christmas and been investigating why Christmas is so important to Christians. We cannot talk about this term without mentioning our wonderful Nativity – Lights, Camel, Action! The children have worked so hard to make it a wonderful performance and we are sure you will agree, it is amazing! The children have been engaged and enthusiastic about all of our learning this half term and have made such wonderful progress. Wishing them and their families a wonderful Christmas break and we look forward to seeing you back in the New Year!

Autumn Term 1 - Paddington

We have had an exciting and busy first term in Cherry Class. We began the term learning about different emotions using The Colour Monster. In English, we were practising writing basic sentences with finger spaces and full stops. We then moved onto the story of Paddington and rewrote the story in our own words. Finally, we wrote an information text about Salisbury following our school trip.

In Maths, we began by learning about Place Value within 10, learning how to count forwards and backwards, identify 1 more and 1 less and compare numbers within 10. We also started our unit on Addition and Subtraction within 10, beginning with learning about the part whole model. We will continue this unit in Autumn Term 2.

In Science, we have been learning about Materials and their properties. We carried out a couple of experiments looking at the transparency and absorbency of different materials, as well as exploring the school grounds for different materials and their textures.

In Geography, we were answering the question 'What is the Geography of where I live?'. We used maps and aerial view images to learn about Winterbourne and Salisbury. We also learnt about the four countries of the UK and that the UK is in the continent of Europe.

In PE, we have been developing our dance skills - learning to move in time with others and to the beat of the music. We also learnt about the fundamental skills of movement and practised our jumping, skipping and hopping.

The children have worked incredibly hard this half term and learnt a lot.

We hope that you all have a restful break and look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 4th November for Autumn Term 2!
