Celebrating Autumn Term 1
We have had a super start to Year 2, all successfully rising to the new challenges!
Our writing units have been driven by our geography topic where we have investigated why penguins don’t fly! Our learning has led us to explore Antarctica, considering climate, adaptation and making comparisons with other animals from other parts of the world. We captured our findings in a non-chronological report all about penguins and, inspired by our class text, produced our own narratives set in the frozen Antarctic.
In maths we have developed our understanding of place value have started to learn different strategies for addition and subtraction to apply these to solve problems.
We have been fortunate in our PE lessons to have had a Sport’s Coach join us to help us develop a variety of fundamental skills. In addition, we have been practising yoga and creating our own flows!
Building on our knowledge of every day materials from our Science lessons in Year 1, we have conducted a number of investigations into the properties of different materials and their uses. Our investigations have explored the best materials for the Three Little Pig’s house, a safety jacket for Humpty Dumpty and the best materials for creating new bicycle tyres!
We have all enjoyed our art sessions where we have practised the skill of colour mixing, using tints and tones and creating our own pieces inspired by well-know artists including Pollock, Delaunay and Kandinsky.
We are now looking forward to next half term!
Celebrating Autumn Term 2
As another busy term draws to a close we have taken time to reflect on all that we have achieved…
Learning about ‘Visionary Victorians’ in response to our enquiry questions of ‘How have the Victorians shaped our lives; has introduced us to a number of significant individuals including Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, along with learning about the impact of important inventions such as, the development of railway network, the first electric telegraph and, later, the telephone. We also learnt about what life would have been like as a Victorian child, supported by the classic tale of Oliver Twist. We were inspired to produce some amazing diary extracts, non-chronological reports and even, as part of our design and technology project, Victorian inspired lavender bags!
In science we have been busily learning about living things and their habitats, looking at characteristics and practising our classification skills.
Maths has seen us further consolidate our addition and subtraction skills as well as complete a unit looking a 2-D and 3-D shapes and their properties.
We have been fortunate to have made super memories this term including our class trip to Milestones Museum where we got to walk the Victorian streets and experience life in Victorian times and, of course performing our nativity of ‘Tinsel and Tea Towels’ where we all sang and performed with courage and amazing enthusiasm.
