Half-termly overviews
Please have a look at the curriculum overviews for the half-terms to see what we are learning. Remember to pop back at the end of each term to celebrate with us!
Celebrating Spring Term 2
So many memorable moments this half term! We loved having a visit from renowned author Kristina Stephenson, creator of the Sir Charlie Stink Socks series, where we learnt about her writing process and were able to join her in performing one of her stories.
As part of World Book Week, we were also treated to a poetry workshop by poet James Carter. This was a high energy, fun workshop that inspired us to write and perform our own poems.
In maths we explored mass, capacity and temperature as well as length and height whilst also beginning to navigate our times-tables.
Our science learning has seen us investigate how to stay healthy in terms of healthy eating, hygiene and exercise, a theme we continued into our PE lessons.
Another highlight of the term was a workshop from Dance Six-0, a local dance company that taught us how to retell stories and convey messages through interpretative dance.
Our History learning about how historians find out about the past focussed on evaluating sources to discover more about the Great Fire of London. This inspired our English writing this term where we produced some very interesting information texts as well as great diary entries drawing upon all that we had learnt.
Sculpture was our focus in art where we were inspired by a number of different artists to try own sculptures from a variety of different materials, including, soap, bread dough and cocktail sticks!
We finished the term with a fantastic trip to Longleat Safari Park where we had a hands-on workshop learning about different animal habitats and adaptations followed by close encounters with meerkats and even a trip through the safari park to see the larger animals – a great way to conclude our Science topic.
Celebrating Spring Term 1
This half term we began our ‘Just Read’ approach to our daily reading sessions which has seen us really enjoy ‘The Guardians of Magic’ novel. We have honed our reading skills of fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, predicting and summarising, but most of all we have loved sharing a great book together.
In maths we have been focussing on multiplication and division and learnt different strategies, using a variety of resources to help us understand these important concepts.
We’ve had great fun in design and technology learning new food preparation skills, interpreting a design brief and honing our evaluating skills. Our new skills were put to good use as our English learning culminated in writing and following instructions to make (and eat!) tasty fruit skewers. We did get off to a ‘sticky’ start with instructions as our first attempts, that Mrs Bravery followed to the letter, resulted in some interesting result as you can see from the photos – we certainly learnt the importance of writing clear, explicit instructions!
Thanks to our Geography topic we were well informed as to where the fruit we were using had come from and the advantages and disadvantages of importing fruit!
In PE this half term we developed our gymnastic skills focussing on creating shapes, balances and exploring different ways of travelling, while in yoga we refined our techniques and created flows.
It has been a busy half-term but with still much to look forward to!
