‘As each one does their part, we grow in love’

Autumn 2022

Autumn Term 2

We have had such a wonderful half term in Year 1! The children have really enjoyed our Great Fire of London topic and can remember so many wonderful facts. They have written information texts and diary entries in English, learnt about the events of the Great Fire in History and even been to Salisbury Museum to try on costumes and learn even more.

In Maths, the children have been learning how to add and subtract in different ways. They really understand the part whole model now - get them to show you!

In our Phonics, we have been learning lots of new Year 1 sounds: ai, ay and a-e, ee, ea and e-e, igh, ie and i-e, oa, ow and o-e, oo, ew and u-e. The children are fantastic at recognising and reading these sounds!

In Science, we have been learning about Seasonal Change, in particular the changes from Autumn to Winter. We have been able to see and notice many changes in our school grounds throughout the past month.

Of course, we cannot forget the Nativity that has taken up lots of our time and hard work this half term. I hope you will agree that it really was a wonderful show and so much credit is due to the children for their hard work and committment to putting on a star performance!

The children really have been incredible and made so much progress this half term - they truly deserve a wonderful and relaxing Christmas.

We wish you all a lovely break and hope you enjoy your festivities.

We look forward to seeing you back in January for an exciting new year of learning!

Autumn Term 1

What a busy half term it has been for Cherry Class! The children have settled so well into Year 1 and the new expectations and routines. They have been so excited about our Paddington unit and have completed some wonderful writing about the story.

In Maths we have been learning about Place Value within 10 and the children have been learning how to find one more and less than numbers, order numbers and compare numbers.

In Science, we have been learning about the seasons and focusing on Autumn this half term. We have also looked at different materials and their properties so that we could design and make a coat for Paddington.

In PE we have had dance sessions with Kids Love Fit and also been developing our ball skills: throwing, catching, rolling and dribbling.
In Geography we have learned loads about our local area, including Winterbourne Earls and Salisbury. We have looked at maps and had a go at plotting routes on these as well.

In Music we have been learning about rhythm in pulse and the difference between rapping and singing.

Our RE learning has been all about the Creation story and answering the question 'Who made the world?'

We have also been on a local area welly walk where we created journey sticks to help us remember the route taken, as well as getting the public bus into Salisbury to do a landmark tour and scavenger hunt in the city.

As you can see, we have achieved lots! I hope the children have a wonderful half term break and I look forward to all of the exciting learning and adventures that we will have in Autumn 2!
