‘Happy, Confident and Successful Learners’

English

We aim to develop children who are able to speak clearly and confidently in front of other people and who can work well as part of a group listening responsively to the thoughts and ideas of others. As the children develop they will learn how to use clear language to express their feelings and ideas and how to speak in a range of contexts showing awareness of the audience. This will involve speaking in class, in collective worship, performing poetry and participating in drama activities. We have a story teller as a member of staff who works with children specifically to develop oral language skills.

We aim to develop in the children a lifelong enjoyment of books and reading. We build on the interests, personality and different levels of ability each child has. Children follow a progressive phonics programme from the time they start school. The children will be challenged to read a range of media from classic texts to online publications. We participate in national reading events like national Book Week and involve authors who work with the children and talk about books they are publishing. Our school librarian is very active in promoting use of the library and promoting a love of reading.

The ability to produce high quality writing depends on a sound understanding of basic skills and as a school we work hard to develop clear and well-formed handwriting, good spelling skills and a sound understanding of punctuation and grammar. We aim to develop not only technically accurate writers but writers who take pleasure from being imaginative and creative when writing for a range of purposes.
