‘Happy, Confident and Successful Learners’

At Winterbourne Earls, science is either taught discretely or as part of a theme; whichever fits the content of the curriculum most appropriately. Science is a recognised strength of the school (as acknowledged by our recent Primary Science Quality Mark Gold Award) and we have created a set of ‘principles’ for the teaching and learning of science within the school.

They are:

  • Children have a buzz about science and talk enthusiastically about it.
  • Children’s scientific enquiry skills show progression as they go through the school.
  • Children work practically using the whole school environment.
  • Children are able to talk about what they have learnt.
  • We make links to the child’s world.
  • Children want to find things out for themselves.
  • Teachers plan appropriate and engaging cross curricular links with science.

The science content taught in each year group has been reviewed and follows the new National Curriculum (see Curriculum Overviews).
