‘As each one does their part, we grow in love’

Home Learning

All staff are aiming to update work and activities weekly for your child, however there may be a point at which the class teacher becomes unwell and is unable to set work for a period of time. We will do our best to ensure there are general websites and activities for your child to use in the event of this happening.

Thank you all for your understanding during this difficult time. We hope that you and your families stay healthy and well.

Expectations for Home Learning

The whole staff has worked very hard over the holidays to do our best to support home learning, having taken your views on board following our recent phone calls to you all. Those in school will be taught the same lessons, so if children are in school, please ensure their home learning is up to date as teaching many differentiated lessons to different year groups is quite a challenge without having to go over missed work.

As a school we would like to provide as much continuity as possible and hence have all agreed to prepare home learning and give feedback via Seesaw/Google Classrooms. We would therefore appreciate your commitment to the following:

Parents/children

  • Compulsory for all -daily reading, daily English tasks , daily maths tasks
  • Compulsory for Y3-6 daily times tables- Times Tables Rockstars as a minimum
  • Optional-foundation subjects on webpage eg topic ,science, art, DT, music etc
  • Life skills activities like virtual shopping, baking and gardening
  • White Rose maths videos and worksheets for Mon-Fri should take about an hour and children/parents mark work from answers given
  • English tasks (to include phonics for YR,Y1,Y2) to take about an hour Mon-Thur
  • Exemplars and text features sheets giving guidance for each year group to be used to help children with expected standards
  • English to be submitted via Seesaw if handwritten or Google Classrooms (Y4-6) as directed by teacher by 6pm on Thursday with feedback received by Sunday pm
  • Any work related to topic/foundation subjects can be completed in afternoons or Fridays with one piece of  ‘best work’ shared via Seesaw
  • Parents please note that we can realistically give good feedback on a limited number of items posted- one English post and one other per week!
  • Parents/children with any concerns can use the class emails eg rowan@winterbourneearls.wilts.sch.uk which will be monitored daily.                               Thanks for your support on this.

Suggested Timetable

It is a good idea to have some structure to the day when learning from home, just like we do in school. Below is a suggested timetable that you might like to use if you are finding it difficult to structure your day.

9.00-9.30 PE Lesson with Joe Wicks (see useful links page)

9.30-10.15 English

10.15-10.30 Reading

10.30-11.00 Break (time to relax for a little bit, have a snack and drink and recharge)

11.00-11.45 Maths

11.45-12.00 Times tables practise

12.00-1.30 Lunch

Remember to try and spend some time in your garden if you have one, or open the windows and enjoy the fresh air! You need to have some time to relax and have fun during this uncertain time.

Into Film offered our Choir 50 free places to the cinema to watch The Greatest Showman in November.  They are opening up a competition for your children to become budding film makers through their 'Nature in your Neighbourhood' film competition which ties in brilliantly with our nature topic.  Please see the link below for details of how to join.

Miss Wright

*Parents* We have decided that in order to make times tables more simple and easy to follow, we will put up a suggested weekly times table focus for you that we hope you can have a go at using. This will help us to track which times tables the children are learning and able to do. On a Friday we would appreciate it if you could use your Maths time to answer some set questions on these times tables so that we can see how your child is getting on with these at home! If your child likes a challenge, they can set a time limit and see how quickly they can answer them in but this time limit is OPTIONAL as we know not all children respond well to this.

Activity 2 - Length

 https://nrich.maths.org/4332

Follow the above link for a problem solving activity linked to length. There is an interactive version of the activity involving cuisenaire rods to help children solve the problem.

-  Activity 3 - Estimating, Measuring and Comparing Length

This is a simple but effective way to practise estimating, measuring and comparing lengths: give each learner a small piece of plasticine or modelling clay. Give them time to roll 4 different length worms. They order the worms from shortest to longest. They then estimate the length of the shortest worm and once they have, they measure it. They use this knowledge to estimate the length of the next worm and then measure it. They continue to do this for all the worms. They can then find the differences in length between their worms and also add pairs of their lengths together.

Resources required: plasticine or modelling clay

Reading

Please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes a day (not all in one go but spread across the day).

Think about questions that you could ask your child related to their book to check their understanding. I have attached some useful documents to use below when reading with your child. Different comprehensions and work will be uploaded for your child to complete either by using the text online and answering questions on a sheet of paper (please write out the questions and answers) or if you are able to print at home then you can answer directly on the sheet.

Comprehensions: please choose either the one star, two star or three star comprehension for your child, based on their reading level and how confident you feel they are. They should copy out the questions and answers (unless you are able to print off the work) and you will find the answers after the questions in the document to help you check if your child has answered correctly.

Epic Online Reading Platform

As we know it may be difficult to have access to books during Self-Isolation or working from home, we have signed children up to this online reading platform to enable children to access books on either a computer or laptop, ipad or phone. All that your child needs to do to access these is to follow the link below and then enter the class code: bqj5006.

Once into the platform, they should then select their name and they will be able to access a range of reading resources such as ebooks, audiobooks and videos.

As teachers, we are able to set specific texts and quizzes on the books to support children understanding of their reading. We can also monitor which children are accessing the texts and completing the assigned books.

This is a really useful tool to help children to keep reading during these difficult times.

Science

Here you will find some examples of fun Science experiments that you can do at home with your children. Your child could write a list of equipment, a method and predict what they think will happen and draw a labelled diagram of the experiment. They could also talk about any observations they can make during the experiment and write up a conclusion to show what has happened and whether their prediction was right!

Most importantly, have fun with it!

Here are some links to sites where you can practise all the wonderful French you’ve learnt at school!  Have fun playing the games and improving your recall of vocabulary.  A few minutes a day and you’ll be confident French speakers in no time at all.

English:

18th March - Please research some information about the Iron Age using books or the internet and record what you find in note form e.g. the key information only. The children should think about different sections that they would like to include when they create their own Iron Age Fact page and research accordingly. Some questions they may find useful to answer when researching are:

When was the Iron Age?

What was the Iron Age?

Where did they live?

What did they eat?

What did they wear?

What did they do?

Why was it called the 'Iron Age'?

What weapons did they have and why?

This is not an extensive list of areas to research but a good starting point to help your child start off in the right direction.

19th March - using the research that your child has done, they should plan a fact page about the Iron Age, possibly using the template below. The plan should include what the heading would be, any sub-headings they would use, their notes from the research sorted under the right sub-headings and a plan of any pictures, images or fact boxes they might like to use. This should all be in note form and possibly a couple of words in a box where pictures might be, so that the child knows what the layout will look like when they write it up properly.

If your child decides to create their own plan - they might like to use a double page spread in their home learning books (or large piece of paper) to plan out where each section will be.

20th March - using the plan that your child has created, they should create their own fact page about the Iron Age using the features we discussed earlier in the week and their plan. This should include: heading, sub-headings, paragraphs, facts, pictures, third person language (people, women, men, they), bullet points, past tense verbs (cooked, lived etc.) This should be completed in your child's home learning book or on a sheet of paper if you do not have one. Please remind your child to think about capital letters, full stops, other punctuation (? and !), neat handwriting and presentation.
