We were delighted to have local author Julia Edward's as our Patron of Reading for the 2015-2016 academic year. A Patron of Reading works closely with the school to foster a culture of reading for enjoyment. This was the first time we have had a Patron of Reading here at Winterbourne Earls and we all thought that it was a fantastic opportunity for everyone and we thank Julia for all her time and commitment to this project.
Julia Edwards is the author of The Scar Gatherer series, a sequence of seven adventure novels about time-travel for 8 to 12 year olds. The third book in the series, "The Falconer's Quarry", was published in September 2015, set in Tudor England. The first two books are "The Leopard in the Golden Cage", set in Roman Britain, and "Saving the Unicorn's Horn", set in the Viking Age.
Throughout her year with us, Julia popped in regularly to work with the children on various literacy projects and skills which closely followed the timetable of her own writing of her fourth book, which is set during the Great Fire of London and was published in September 2016. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children, staff and Julia herself to develop a working long-term relationship with a real-life author, follow the process of writing a book from research to publication as well as encouraging a love of reading for fun. She also encouraged and supported our Reading Progression Board which saw the children progress with their positive attitude to reading. It was fabulous to see so many children progress from Top Book Borrower to Star Reader and up to Superstar Reader over the year and we hope this enthusiasm will continue this year.
